1. Tom yam kung soup

‘Tom yam’ roughly translates to ‘mixed soup’, and ‘kung’ refers to the prawns used to make the broth. This hot and sour soup will warm you right down to your toes thanks to spices like galangal, kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass.

2. Som tam papaya salad

While som tam is a salad and is therefore eaten cold, it’s still sure to warm you up: this green papaya dish is flavoured with plenty of chilli, garlic and fish sauce.

3. Larb

Larb is originally from Laos, but immigrants have made it a popular dish in Thailand too. Meat or fish is fried with plenty of spices and chilli, and then served with fresh vegetables and sticky rice. Spices such as cinnamon, cumin and cloves will warm both body and soul.

4. Pad krapao

The name roughly translates to ‘holy basil stir-fry’, so you know you’ll be getting truly delicious spices if you choose this dish. Mincemeat or shrimps are fried together with the eponymous Thai holy basil, garlic, chilli and fish sauce. The mixture is then served with rice and, if desired, a fried egg. Mmm!

5. Kaeng panaeng

An aromatic peanut curry made with chilli paste, dried spices and fresh coconut milk. It can be served with various types of meat, tofu, fish or vegetables – whatever you like best. Garnished with peanuts, this Thai dish is sure to fire you up.
